Americorps Vista in northern Michigan has several openings for positions starting this summer. These service programs are perfect for graduating college students looking to extend their learning and make important connections into the food, farming, and health fields.  These positions provide serious career-track opportunities for interested candidates.

TBAISD Farm to School Position

Are you passionate about healthy food, farms, and kids? Or do you know someone who is? Then please spread the word:

Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District has an AmeriCorps VISTA job opening in its Farm to School Program, which is a collaboration with the Michigan Land Use Institute to create and implement curriculum, school gardens, and procurement of local and regional food products throughout the region. The job description states that the value of the position is to help students eat more healthy foods, as it will have a positive effect on their ability to concentrate and learn. Other values include being good stewards of the environment and teaching students skills and strategies to carry through their lifetime. Integrating farm to school and school garden lessons with new science, English, and math standards for activities and lessons will be an aspect of the position.


Food and Farming Network Vista Position

The Northwest Michigan Food and Farming Network, through its host-site at the Michigan Land Use Institute, have one Vista Service position available for the 2015 – 2016 school year, starting in July 2015.  The position will help the Network manage communications to its participating members across ten counties of northwest Lower Michigan, and take on a major research project collecting data metrics on the Network’s goals and objectives. The Network is made up of volunteers from across the region and requires someone who can work easily with many different people.  The right candidate will have a passion of working in local communities, have familiarity managing data, social media, and possess outstanding oral and written communication skills.  Find out more about the Network’s mission here.

The Northwest Lower Michigan Regional AmeriCorps VISTA Project, housed at the United Way of Northwest Michigan, supports and coordinates the terms of service for up to twenty VISTA’s at a time. Our team connects VISTA’s with local non-profit host sites and ensures a successful year for both parties. We have sponsored nearly 40 VISTA terms of service and have worked with more than ten local non-profits over the past six years.
